Winterhawks even series

PORTLAND - Ryan Johansen scored a power play goal early in the second period and it proved to be the game winner as the Portland Winterhawks beat the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in Game 2 of the Western Hockey League Western Conference Finals on Sunday night before 6,506 at the Rose Garden.

The best-of-7 series in now tied at one game apiece.

Matt Marantz scored late in the first period, with an assist by Dominik Uher, to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. It was Marantz' third playoff goal. Portland answered 33 seconds later on a goal by William Wrenn to even the game at 1 after one period.

Portland outshot Spokane 20-8 in the second period, but the Chiefs held a 13-5 shot advantage in the third. The Chiefs' James Reid stopped 34 shots in the loss. Portland outshot Spokane 36-35 for the game.

Spokane, which lost for the second time in six games at Portland this season, hosts the Winterhawks in Game 3 on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Spokane Arena.
