COEUR d'ALENE - On a day that began with some of the best weather of the season, records fell at the Inland Empire League track and field championships on Thursday at Lake City High.

But once the boys 400-meter dash concluded, the reigning champion of the spring, Mother Nature, took over with blustery winds and with the threat of thunderstorms, coaches opted to call off the meet with four events remaining.

Even wackier, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings left the meet thinking they had won both boys and girls team titles. But some three hours later, in reviewing the results Lake City coach Kelly Reed had discovered that the boys and girls triple jump, which had been completed before the postponement, hadn't been scored.

Lake City's boys went 1-2-3 and with the additional 24 points, the Timberwolves edged Coeur d'Alene by one point for the team title. Coeur d'Alene wound up winning the girls meet by 24 1/2 points.

"It's exciting for us, even thought the meet was shortened due to weather," Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. "I thought all the kids, and not just from Lake City, competed well, especially with conditions like that."

Before the storm, Coeur d'Alene senior Jonathan Murray set a school and meet record in the discus with a throw of 174 feet, 3 inches, breaking the previous meet record of 165-6 set by Lewiston's Cody Hays in 2007.

"I'd thrown 169 feet (in his previous attempt), so I knew I needed another five feet," Murray said. "It was a good throw."

At first, Murray didn't realize he had broken either record.

"I really wanted to break the school record and did by one foot and an inch," Murray said. "It's a slow, but steady game."

Murray, whose personal record was 149 feet, hopes to increase on this mark in the coming weeks.

"I want to throw 180," Murray said. "Working with Hammer Idaho, it has definitely given me some stability when I throw. It's really given me an edge."

Coeur d'Alene freshman Addison Johnson broke the school record in the 100-meter dash in 11.18 seconds and was five-tenths of a second behind the meet record set by Moscow's Jayson Washington in 2009. Gomez broke the meet record in the 800 in 2 minutes, 18 seconds, three seconds faster than the previous record set by Breanna Sande of Lake City in 2005. Madison Sumner broke the school record in the 400, finishing second in 1:03.83.

"We had some amazing performances on one of the worst days of the year," Coeur d'Alene coach Linda Lanker said. "With Jonathan, Addison, Kinsey and Madison setting or breaking meet records, it was a good day for us."

Lake City senior Robbie Quinn set a school record in the long jump at 21 feet, 11 inches.

“Robbie’s been consistent for us all season,” Reed said. “He’s really been coming into his own this season. He works hard at it and takes it very seriously. He’s a great role model for the younger kids as far as his work ethic. I’m really excited for him and look forward to watching him succeed.”

Nick Gosselin won the 400 in 51.86 for Lake City, which finished third in the boys meet.

“Our relays ran really well, both boys and girls,” Reed said. “Nick ran a great 400 for us today.”

Post Falls finished second in the boys meet and third in the girls meet, which ended after the boys’ 400 as weather continued to wreak havoc on Lake City High.

“It’s hard to tell where we’re at as a team with this kind of weather,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “We’ll be all right. We’re still working hard to improve. This kind of weather isn’t going to produce any PR’s. We just need some warm weather and you’ll see some good marks from everyone.”

Lakeland’s Latecia Howell (100 meter dash) and Kaitlyn Whitesitt (pole vault) each had wins for the Hawk girls, who finished third.
