COEUR d'ALENE - With his father in jail under suspicion of inflicting the injuries, a 1-month-old Coeur d'Alene child remained hospitalized in very serious condition Monday.

Coeur d'Alene police spokeswoman, Sgt. Christie Wood, said Noah Blanchard was breathing on his own after being removed from a ventilator. The child received serious head injuries last week.

Wood said doctors reported that medical problems from the injuries will likely be long-term.

"He will be hospitalized for quite some time," Wood said.

She said that the boy is in the custody of the state, and state officials will continue to make decisions pertaining to his care.

The boy's father, James D. Blanchard, 19, is accused of seriously hurting the boy last week at an apartment they were staying at 1042 N. 17th St.

A Kootenai County deputy prosecutor said James Blanchard allegedly did not call 911 when the boy was injured, but instead called the boy's mother, 18-year-old Angelina Ray, who was not home. She dialed 911 when she arrived at home.

The prosecutor, David Robins, said in court last week that witnesses would be able to describe at trial a new father who had at times allegedly shaken the baby, forced him to eat, screamed at him, tossed him across a room, and even slammed the boy down into a crib.

Members of James Blanchard's family have denied the allegations, saying he would have never hurt his son.
