Tree decision could come tonight
COEUR d'ALENE - The official OK for the city to begin yanking trees along Dike Road could come tonight.
The City Council is expected to green light the engineer department's mitigation proposal during its meeting at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Coeur d'Alene public library.
The city's Public Works Committee recommended the city adopt a plan to begin addressing flood hazard concerns.
If those concerns aren't addressed, insurance rates in the neighborhood could go through the roof, city officials said, noting last week that while they don't love the plan, their hands are tied.
Should approval come tonight, the city could begin thinning smaller vegetation, while it works with the federal department to determine if compromise can be reached on some of the bigger trees.
Police call off high-speed chase
COEUR d'ALENE - A high-speed chase that topped 90 mph was called off early Sunday.
Coeur d'Alene police tried to stop a motorcycle with a male driver and female passenger for a traffic violation near U.S. 95 and Haycraft around 2:45 a.m.
The same motorcycle sped from a city officer earlier, said Sgt. Christie Wood.
Officers followed the bike until it reached the end of the city limits. The county took over but discontinued at Highway 41 and Boekel around 3 a.m. due to safety concerns for citizens.
