Gertrude "Trudy" Georgina (Valeriote) McDevitt, 83, passed away Aug. 1, 2011.

She was born to the late Michael and Elizabeth Valeriote, Feb. 13, 1928, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, the 14th of 16 children.

She was educated at the Lorreto Academy in Guelph and later moved to Montreal, where she met and married her husband of 58 years in 1953. Shortly after the birth of her son, they immigrated to the United States in 1960, where she raised her family in Fairfield, Calif., for the next 33 years.

In 1993, she and her husband moved to Coeur d'Alene to be near her daughter and family. She was a wonderful wife and mother, and worked most of her life as a typist and medical transcriptionist in Montreal and Fairfield. She enjoyed cooking, reading, slot machines, travel, classical music and opera. She was very proud of her Italian heritage, and was a member of the Spokane Italian American Club.

Gertrude is survived by her husband, Gerald; her son, Peter (wife, Marlys); her daughter, Valerie Kastens (husband, Curtis); and her three grandchildren, Alex Kastens, Anna McDevitt and Krista McDevitt. As well, she is survived by her brothers, Pacifico Valeriote, Dr. Richard Valeriote; and her sisters, Savina Scannell and Anna Bordignon; and many nieces and nephews. She was extremely proud of her family, extended family and loving friends.

A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 625 E. Haycraft Ave., Coeur d'Alene. Please visit Gertrude's memorial and sign her online guest book at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations for Hospice of North Idaho or the St. Pius X Catholic Church Columbarium Trust Fund.
