Shedd to speak at kNIFVES meeting
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ben Shedd will be the guest speaker at the kNIFVES (Northwest Independent Film & Video Entertainment Society) meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Davenport Hotel (Peacock Room Lounge), 10 S. Post St. in Spokane.
Shedd has been a professional film and video director, producer and writer since 1970. He received the 1978 Academy Award Oscar for the Best Documentary Short Subject for his science film "The Flight of the Gossamer Condor."
Shedd has taught numerous film and digital production classes at four universities including his alma mater, The University of Southern California.
Free for first-time visitors, $5 for return visitors.

Heavenly Harp free concerts next week
A mother-daughter musical duo known as Heavenly Harp will give two free concerts next week.
Karin and Joy Gunderson will perform at Calvary Lutheran Church 1011 N. Compton St. at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, and at Lutheran Church of the Master Ramsey Road at Kathleen in Coeur d'Alene on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
Enjoy a combination of harp duets, solos, inspirational stories from Karin's work as a hospice harpist and peaceful music featuring flute, and vocals along with two harps.
The Gundersons will present an hour-long program in a variety of styles.
Joy Gunderson, at age 11, was already performing the Handel's Harp Concerto. Today, at age 19, she is one of the top three harpists in the Phoenix, Ariz., area. She just finished her sophomore year at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., where she studies harp with the Minnesota Orchestra harpist, Kathy Kienzle.
CDs and DVDs will be available. There is no admission charge, but an offering will be taken to help with their travels.

Grimes' work to be on display at gallery
The work of artist Robert Grimes will be on display at the Art Spirit Gallery Aug. 12 to Sept. 3.
Grimes' display will include 12 new pieces that have never been shown before.
An opening reception with Grimes will be from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 12 in conjunction with the second Friday Downtown ArtWalk. There will be a gallery talk by the artist at 1 p.m. Aug. 13.
