COUNCIL: McEuen fury is still alive
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 14 years, 9 months AGO
Five members of our City Council have failed us once again. At the council meeting on Aug. 2, a concerned member of our community pointed out that the $125,000 McEuen Park contract with Miller/Stauffer has not been completed. What an eye-opener to those present! However, when the time came for the vote on whether to approve an additional $60,300 for Miller/Stauffer, it was immediately moved and seconded that they be awarded this amount.
To his credit, before the vote Woody McEvers asked Doug Eastwood about the contract and if they were doing something else than what they were supposed to be doing. Doug's first words were, "I am not 100 percent sure either." Yet every council member, except for Ron Edinger, voted for the newly contracted monies. How easily they could have tabled that issue for further study and consideration, thereby lending some credibility to their deliberations.
Also, Ron Edinger tried again at that meeting to put an advisory vote for us on the ballot in November, but his motion died because no fellow council member would second it. All we want is a chance to demonstrate to the powers that be the true will of the people. It would be illuminating to all concerned. Therein lies the rub for those in power. They could no longer proceed upon their misbegotten path after such a public rebuke.
Realistically, at this point, the only hope for responsible city government here in Coeur d'Alene is to replace those council members who choose to ignore us. Dismissal seems the ideal cure for arrogance.
