Sewage spill leaks into ground

HAYDEN - About 7,500 gallons of raw sewage spilled out of a sewer line in Hayden when a valve broke Friday morning.
The release occurred on Honeysuckle Avenue near the corner of Ramsey Road in a residential area.
Ken Windram, Hayden Area Regional Sewer board, said there were no immediate threats to drinking water supplies and there were no visible signs of the spill shortly after it was reported through a 9-1-1 call around 7 a.m.
The sewage leaked out through a biofilter and soaked into the ground.
"It was really just wastewater," he said.
The surface area of the spill was treated with chlorine bleach and lime.
Windram said the valve will be repaired next week because it requires that the street be tore up.
The sewer board has contacted a hydro-geologist to evaluate and determine the impact of the release on groundwater and near-by water wells. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has also been contacted.
