Graham Creek to reopen as bears disappear

Effective today, Graham Creek will reopen for public use.

Frequent bear encounters had prompted a shutdown of the popular camping area on the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District in late July for public safety concerns.

But Forest Service representatives believe it will be safer now at the site.

The lack of trash and food onsite has discouraged bears from visiting, and huckleberries and other food sources recently available have drawn the animals back into the hillsides away from the site.

Campers are still asked to be bear aware, by storing food and trash properly while staying at the site.

There is no guarantee bears will not return, according to a press release.

Graham Creek is  located approximately 14 miles northbound on Forest Highway 9.
