Five swimmers from the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team were selected for the Inland Empire Swimming Team and competed in the Western Zone All Star Team Championships in Clovis, Calif., Aug. 9-11.

Peyton Bowen (15), Ethan Cordes (14), Maggie de Tar (12), Nicole Rozier (13), and Spencer Shuman (14) swam in the five-day meet. The Western Zone meet draws swimmers from the entire western United States, creating one of the most highly competitive fields of the summer season.

Highlights from the week were Peyton Bowen in the 200 breaststroke (4th), 400 individual medley (8th) and 200 butterfly (8th), Ethan Cordes in the 50 freestyle (4th), 100 butterfly (4th), and 200 butterfly (3rd), Maggie de Tar in the 400 freestyle relay (8th), Nicole Rozier in the 100 butterfly (1st), and Spencer Shuman in the 400 free relay (8th) and 400 medley relay (8th).

Nicole Rozier's 100 butterfly time qualified her for the Junior National meet and ranks her ninth in the United States for her age. The Inland Empire Swimming contingent took sixth place in the team standings.

CAST at junior nationals: The annual long course (50-meter) swimming championships were held last week at Stanford, bringing together the fastest under-18-year-old swimmers from all over the United States.

The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team took two swimmers - Joe Loftus and Bryce Kananowicz - and left another who qualified at home - Kjirsten Magnuson, who was recovering from minor surgery.

While neither of the boys made finals, best times were swam by Joe Loftus in the 200 back (2:09.12), 100 back (1:00.02), 100 free (54.32) and 100 fly and by Bryce Kananowicz in the 100 back (59.42) and 200 IM (2:11.29).
