NWSMC opens season, auditions

Northwest Sacred Music Chorale begins its second decade this year with a fall concert, Nov. 5 and 6. It will feature the return of NWSMC founder and first conductor, Cynthia Marlette.

As guest conductor, Marlette will lead the chorale in a work for symphony orchestra and choir entitled Concert Mass by Joseph Fitzmartin, an American composer and arranger. This major work debuted at Carnegie Hall and has been performed at the Sydney Opera House, by the Novgorod Symphony in Russia and in Berlin.

The NWSMC concert will be the West Coast premiere of this yet unpublished work. This concert will also feature a special guest performance by singer/songwriter Leon Patillo, former lead singer of Santana.

The Chorale welcomes Mary Sims Johnson as its new artistic director. She graduated from Gonzaga University and pursued her master's degree in choral conducting from EWU. Mary currently teaches private voice and piano lessons. She will conduct the Christmas concert on Dec. 21 and the spring concert on April 14-15.

The Chorale is receiving new members and also wishes to especially invite past members of the Chorale (re-audition is not required.) The Concert Mass has a particular need for tenors and basses. Auditions will be held prior to the 6:30 p.m. first rehearsal on Aug. 16.

For an audition time, please contact Nate Jolley at 755-6376 or at execdirector@nwsmc.org. For more about the chorale, visit our website at NWSMC.org.
