Bulldogs, Vikings tie in season opener

COEUR d'ALENE - Adam Borshiem's second goal of the game, in the 68th minute, helped 5A Coeur d'Alene tie 4A Sandpoint 2-2 in the nonleague season opener for both teams Saturday.
Aaron Crossingham of Sandpoint scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute. Teammate Raleigh Hanson's penalty kick early in the second half put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 in the first of three meetings this season between the two teams.
"It was pretty even; both teams had some chances," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said.
Sandpoint plays host to Lewiston on Wednesday.
Coeur d'Alene is home vs. Bonners Ferry on Thursday.

ST. MARIES - Carson Frei scored an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute to give the visiting Bengals the lead for good in the season opener for both teams.
"For our first game, I thought we did really well," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. "We've got a lot of freshmen and sophomores this year. I think we just ran out of gas, but our conditioning will improve throughout the course of the season."
Ryan Kennelly tied the game on an assist by Nick Spooner in the 26th minute and Cody Posselt had 14 saves for St. Maries, which travels to the Coeur d'Alene JV on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM - Senior Emilee Cordon scored one goal and assisted on another as the Vikings, in their season opener, defeated the Hawks in a nonleague match at Corbit Field.
"I was very proud of the girls' effort for 80 minutes," Coeur d'Alene coach Tarragh Carr said. "It is always tough to tell with a young group if they can keep the momentum going. It was nice to see them building something together."
Four others had goals for Coeur d'Alene, which hosts Moscow on Wednesday.
Lakeland (1-1) travels to Post Falls on Wednesday.

ST. MARIES - The shorthanded Lumberjacks, missing several players due to obligations at the county fair, lost to the Bengals in the season opener.
MaKayla Brown scored a hat trick for Lewiston.
"We played 10 on 11 the first half and 9 on 11 the second half," St. Maries coach Paul Ebert said. "We played hard."
St. Maries travels to Priest River on Tuesday.
