North Idaho's second Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich store is slated to open Tuesday just west of the intersection of Highway 95 and Prairie Avenue in Hayden. The 1,610- square-foot place is north of Walmart and next to Thomas Hammer Coffee.
The menu includes a variety of types and sizes of sub-sandwiches with fresh ingredients and French bread and several sides with "freaky-fast" delivery, take-out, catering and inside seating. The store began in Illinois when a college kid figured out a way to make tuition money in 1983, and the company has developed into more than 1,200 stores.
Originally from Kalispell, Mont., local owner Ben McFarland also has the Jimmy John's store on Appleway in Coeur d'Alene and has 30 employees. Hours in Hayden will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Phone 772-2700. Check www.jimmyjohns.com.
Temptations now in TCBY spot
All types of cupcakes, yogurts, ice cream and soft drinks are featured at Temptations. The new store opened where TCBY used to be next to Caruso's Deli in Prairie Shopping Center. At least six specialty cupcakes are offered daily, and the store also has Cougar Gold cheese from WSU and gift items.
Originally from southern Idaho, owner Marla Hobbs-Hill came to North Idaho 17 years ago and opened the TCBY store seven years ago. With six employees, the store opens at 10:30 a.m. and closes at 9:30 or 10:30 p.m. It has indoor and outdoor seating, take-out and will cater events. Phone 762-5700. 'We Rent Fun!' store downtown
All types of watercraft and toys are for rent at Vacation Sports Rentals that opened last month at 301 N. Third St. in downtown Coeur d'Alene.
The huge inventory includes ski boats, Seadoos, pontoon boats, tubes, all types of skis and boards, life vests and wetsuits for half, full and multi-day rentals. Owner Joseph Bordelon also has Beauty Bay Rentals.
Hours begin at 8:30 a.m. daily. Phone 665-0686. Check www.cdasportsrentals.com.
Lotus Crossfit to open on Sunset
Exercise and strength training to help everyday functional movements will be offered at Lotus Crossfit at 241 Sunset Ave. (east of Highway 95 and south of Kathleen). Classes will start Sept. 12. According to owner Eve Fatz, Crossfit is unlike other fitness places.
"At Lotus Crossfit you will not find rows of stationary bikes and weight machines. Instead you find pull-up bars, kettleballs, barbells and open space for squatting, running, jumping, climbing, lifting and throwing," she said. "We teach you to move your body the way it was meant to be moved. Our exercises mimic movements in day-to-day life or sport. We improve your cardio-respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, tolerance and accuracy."
Always physically active and a graduate of the University of Montana, Fatz came to North Idaho from Houston and found Crossfit in her mid-30s. The 2,800-square-foot location will be open at 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. most days. The grand opening 5-8 p.m. Sept. 17 will be catered by Syringa. Phone 771-2078. Check www.lotuscrossfit.com.
Here's this week's tidbits:
• One of the buildings in Riverstone's plans is for the FBI. It must be where you see a huge "No Trespassing" sign that says "Surveillance cameras are being used. If you can read this, you are being watched." Geez.
• The Strategy & Games store in Silver Lake Mall has moved to the north end toward Sears. The quiet halls and empty spaces in SLM are not a good sign.
• Downtown Cd'A this summer is just the opposite. You almost worry what the place is like this weekend with the hydroplane resurgence festivities. Folks who were here 30-40 years ago remember plenty of "trouble." We hope Tubbs Hill won't be devastated with litter and fire danger. The fall cleanup for Tubbs Hill volunteers is Sept. 17.
• "Smithereens" comes from the Irish word "smidirin" for small fragments.
• Did you know life jackets are supposed to have whistles?
