COEUR d’ALENE — The final vision of an education corridor in downtown Coeur d’Alene continues to become more visual.

As the first phases of road and infrastructure construction continue on the old mill site property now owned by North Idaho College, members of the college’s board of trustees are considering plans for a monument sign to mark the college’s new main entrance planned at the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and Hubbard Street.

The monument design and cost are on the agenda for the board of trustees’ regular meeting to be held 6 p.m. Wednesday on campus.

“A monument sign would serve to recognize the entrance to the campus, as well as the concept of combining NIC’s current campus and our new north campus with education partners Lewis-Clark State College and the University of Idaho,” according to state board meeting documents prepared by Ron Dorn, NIC’s vice president for resource management.

The monument would also incorporate the flags of all education partners in the group effort formerly known as NICHE (Northern Idaho Center for Higher Education).

It will highlight North Idaho College’s expanded campus and the collaborative “Center for Higher Education” concept.

NIC contracted with Landmark Landscape Architects, a division of Architects West, to develop the concept designs which have been reviewed by the college’s administrators.

The cost of the proposed monument sign design and construction is estimated not to exceed $160,000. NIC proposes to pay for the sign from its capital investment reserve.
