If you're considering a run for a local elected office on Nov. 8, it's time to think about the paperwork.

Candidates for fire district commissioner races can file declarations now.

Candidates for city council or mayoral races can file beginning Monday.

The filing period for candidates to have their names on the ballot runs through Sept. 9.

The deadline for write-in candidates is Sept. 23.

Most area cities, including Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Rathdrum, and fire districts have openings.

Candidates must file at their city hall or local fire district office. Candidates must complete a declaration of candidacy form and a nominating petition.

Fire district commissioners are required to reside in specific sub-districts, though they are elected by all voters within the district's boundaries.

Candidates must have at least five signatures of registered voters, which will be verified by the county.

City candidates, not fire district candidates, also have the option of paying a $40 fee rather than gathering signatures.

For more information, call your city hall or local fire district office.
