FOOTBALL

CLARK FORK - Running back Jeremy Stivers scored on a 55-yard run on the first offensive play for Lakeside and quarterback Brandon Smith scored on a 42-yard run on the second play to propel the Knights to a 50-0 win over Clark Fork in the season and North Star League opener Friday night.

Smith ran for two scores and threw for another two to lead Lakeside (1-0, 1-0 NSL), which simply had too much size and athleticism for the younger and smaller Wampus Cats (0-1, 0-1 NSL).

"I felt we came out and played quick and executed well for the first game," Lakeside coach Ron Miller said. "I'm pleased with the offensive line. They did a good job opening up holes."

The Wampus Cats are very young, and the game marked the first in what will be a rebuilding season. Making matter worse, the Cats were also without injured players Kale White, Allen Blankenship and Tyler Deprez, each of whom will be ready for next week's game at Mullan.

"Any time you have to start freshman and sophomores you're going to be out-manned," said Clark Fork coach Brian Arthun, who praised the play of freshmen Wyatt Deabenderfer and Wyatt Stevens. "We'll match up well with Mullan and won't be so out-manned."

Lakeside hosts Kootenai next Friday.

HARRISON FLATS - Wallace began its season in high gear, racking up nearly 500 yards in a balanced offensive attack to overwhelm the host Warriors.

The Miners scored 36 points in the first quarter and never looked back in their North Star League opener.

"We had to come out of the gate against one of the state's top Division 1A teams," Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said of Wallace. "But I'm proud of our kids - we had a lot of underclassmen out there and they never quit."

Kootenai quarterback Brandon Carman found Carter Napierala for a 6-yard TD toss in the second quarter, then added an 88-yard run to open the third quarter.

Carman finished 8 of 24 passing for 68 yards and a TD, and the Warriors had 150 yards rushing on 34 attempts.
