EASTON: Beware commercial trap

Because of a valid concern about the safety of a highway running through the middle of Camp Easton property, Scouting officials have softened their hard stance on maintaining the camp as one of the premier and most popular Boy Scout camps in the entire Northwest. If the community would help us, we will organize a campaign to seek pledges from former Scouts, Scout leaders, community members and other concerned people who would like to see Camp Easton continue in its current location.
Building the sub-highway tunnel that has been discussed for the past several years along with a good fence would alleviate this problem and allow our Scout officials to look at this situation more objectively. Our Scout officials are not money-hungry. But they are about to enter into a serious agreement with someone who is. And our Scout leaders are way out of their league when they think they can have an equitable contract with the developers who are making this proposal.
The Coeur d'Alene Press poll has already shown that more than 80 percent of those who responded are against the sale under any conditions. Let's make sure that the Scout Council knows they have our full support when they turn this offer down.
