Eight mayoral positions in Kootenai County are up for election on Nov. 8, along with several city council and fire district seats.

The cities of Hayden, Rathdrum, Athol, Dalton Gardens, Fernan Village, Hayden Lake, Huetter and Worley have mayor positions up for election.

The filing period for city candidates starts on Monday. The deadline for both city and fire candidates to have their name on the ballot is Sept. 9.

"The last weeks of summer here tend to go by quickly," said Cliff Hayes, county clerk. "Candidates should plan to organize their paperwork soon."

The deadline for fire district write-in candidates is Sept. 23 and Oct. 11 for cities.

Candidates must file at their city hall or local fire district office. Candidates must complete a declaration of candidacy form and a nominating petition.

Fire district commissioners are required to reside in specific sub-districts, though they are elected by all voters within the district's boundaries.

Candidates must have at least five signatures of registered voters, which will be verified by the county.

City candidates, not fire district candidates, also have the option of paying a $40 fee rather than gathering signatures.

For more information, call your city hall or local fire district office.

Carrie Phillips, the county's elections manager, said she is unaware of any bond, levy, referendums, recall or other ballot questions that will be on the ballot. However, the deadline for submitting such proposals is Sept. 23.

The Secretary of State's Office is also unaware of any proposals.
