Columbia Falls Cub Scouts Pack 4101 will hold two recruitment nights for boys in grades 1-5 and children 6 or older on Thursday, Sept. 8, during the farmers market on Nucleus Avenue and Monday, Sept. 12, at Glacier Discovery Center.

Committee volunteers

Volunteers are needed to serve on two Flathead County committees. There is currently one opening on the Animal Advisory Committee, which advises the Board of Health about the county animal shelter and provides public education on stray dogs and cats. There is also one opening on the Road Advisory Committee for someone residing in the North Valley commissioners district. Both positions will expire Dec. 31, 2013. Letters of interest should be mailed to Flathead County Commissioners Office, 800 South Main, Kalispell MT 59901 or e-mailed to dkile@flathead.mt.gov by Sept. 12.

Learn to ferment food

Pam Gerwe, of Purple Frog Gardens, will teach a "Fermenting Fun Workshop" at Discovery Square Center during the farmers market on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 5-6 p.m. Fermentation is a method of preserving food with salt. Attendees will take home a pint of salted cabbage that will become sauerkraut within a short amount of time. Cost is $10 and a minimum of 10 pre-registered folks. Flu shots

Smith's Food & Drug Stores pharmacies is currently administering flu shots for $25 per vaccine. No appointment is necessary. The Centers for Disease Control recommends an annual flu shot for all people since influenza is among the most common respiratory illnesses in the U.S., infecting millions every flu season.

Horsemen meet Sept. 13

The Back Country Horsemen of the Flathead will meet in the Fish, Wildlife and Parks offices in Kalispell on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. The volunteer organization is dedicated to protecting stockowners' use of wilderness and backcountry trails, education of horse owners on Leave-No-Trace principles and support to backcountry agencies. Le Grizz ultramarathon

The 30th Le Grizz 50 Mile Ultramarathon will be held along Hungry Horse Reservoir on Saturday, Oct. 8. Sponsored by the Cheetah Herders Athletic Club, the footrace is managed primarily to get first-time ultradistance runners to the finish line. Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
