Hunting regs

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks recently held an open house for hunters, landowners, outfitters and others to help set hunting seasons for 2012 and 2013. The meeting took place at FWP's Region 1 Headquarters, 490 North Meridian Road, in Kalispell, on Monday, Aug. 29. The deadline to submit comments is Sept. 6. Comments can be submitted online at fwp.mt.gov by clicking on "For Hunters" and following links to the "Hunting" homepage. Proposals will be presented to the FWP Commission in December, followed by a public comment opportunity in January 2012. The Commission will adopt final rules in February.

Horsemen meet

The Back Country Horsemen of the Flathead will meet in the Fish, Wildlife and Parks offices in Kalispell on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. The volunteer organization is dedicated to protecting stockowners' use of wilderness and backcountry trails, education of horse owners on Leave-No-Trace principles and support to backcountry agencies. LeGrizz ultramarathon

The 30th Le Grizz 50 Mile Ultramarathon will be held along Hungry Horse Reservoir on Saturday, Oct. 8. Sponsored by the Cheetah Herders Athletic Club, the footrace is managed primarily to get first-time ultradistance runners to the finish line. A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
