Holiday tradition continues

COEUR d'ALENE - Sculpture, pottery, traditional paintings or the abstract.

Whatever it is, it's sure to be there.

Need proof?

On Tuesday, Steve Gibbs, Art Spirit Gallery of Fine Art owner and host of the 13th annual Small Artworks Invitational, still had 250 more pieces to hang before the grand opening reception Friday.

The more, the merrier.

"The idea is that it's the holiday season, and we try to put more affordable pieces out there for people to get more affordable gifts," said Gibbs, taking a break from hanging. "It's fun a show, in that the sales go to a lot more people."

The holiday tradition for the downtown gallery will feature 33 regional artists for nearly 200 pieces. Combined with pieces already in house, around 300 designs will be displayed for the entire month. The only theme was for the artist to keep it relatively small. At least not mammoth.

Therein lies affordability. Make no mistake, big things come in smaller packages, so quality won't be spared.

"It's a pretty wide variety of top level work," Gibbs said.

The event, sponsored for the second year in a row by Duane and Lola Hagadone, runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, at 415 Sherman Ave. It's free, refreshments will be served and artists will be on hand.

In December, the show will be open every day except Christmas Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In the meantime, Gibbs will be busy hanging pieces before Friday, something he should be used to. It's his 128th show in 15 years as a gallery owner.
