Beloved husband, father and esteemed friend, Ward A. Simpson left this life for eternity on Nov. 30, 2011. Born to Hugh, a civil engineer and Hazel, a music teacher, he joined a sister, Naida.

From Fort Dodge, Kan., the family moved to Blackfoot where he graduated high school. During World War II, he joined the Navy and had the opportunity to move and pursue his education. He attended Notre Dame University and received a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Idaho. Insatiably curious, he thrived in learning and challenging his intellect. Ward expanded his other talents and also worked in auto body repair. Cars, old and new were a lifelong interest.

He married Joan E. Korter in 1951 and settled to family life in Moscow where he and Jo raised their children and lived until retirement from New York Life Co. Retirement offered endless opportunities for hobbies and new interests. He explored his musical heritage by learning to play the piano.

In addition, new activities became important. He taught himself totem pole carving - examples of his work are located around Lake Coeur d'Alene, a prolific gardener, student of evolving technology and boating enthusiast. Ward loved cruising his one of a kind custom tug in Mica Bay creating unforgettable memories for family and friends.

Framing Jo's artwork was his full-time retirement job and he was her most passionate supporter. Wonderful old friends and new acquaintances offered opportunities for endless conversations which usually provided solutions to world problems.

Ward's retirement years were further enhanced with the birth of Hugh's children, Blake, Skyler and MacKinnon followed by the birth of John's children Johann, Samuel and Amanda. He was very proud of his grandchildren and their achievements in sports, musical talents and academic excellence. Ward took great pleasure in introducing them to the joys of living on Lake Coeur d'Alene. However, his true joy was watching them develop into unique and remarkable individuals.

His wife, Jo, and children Jennifer (Ron), John (Connie) and Hugh (Denise) join his friends in missing him. He will always be in our hearts and with us as we watch the sun rise over Mica Bay, coffee in hand as this was his great pleasure to do each morning.

A celebration of his life is planned for family and friends this summer on Mica Bay. Yates Funeral Homes has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements. Please visit Ward's memorial and sign his online guest book at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
