Wolfpack wins Mining City Duals

BUTTE - Mining City Duals champs.
The Glacier Wolfpack won four straight wrestling duals on Saturday and came home with the title.
But it was a thrill ride from start to finish.
The Wolfpack opened the day 45-31 over Corvallis, followed that with victories over Missoula Sentinel (52-33) and Billings Skyview (39-31) and wrapped up the championship with a 42-37 come-from-behind win over Great Falls High.
"Total team effort, including our fans and our managers," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.
"It was everybody working together and everything fell together for us.
"It was a very good day. They're loving it - and every single one of them had a part in it."
That last two duals were hand-wringers, though.
The Billings Skyview dual started at 215 and the championship at 98.
Both of those schools are tough in those weight classes and the Wolfpack found itself down early in both.
"We had to really come back on them. Our upper weights, they went out there to win," Fischer said.
It started at 98 pounds - and the Wolfpack was down 37-12 after the 152-pound weight class.
"There was a time in the Great Falls dual where we were deflated," Fischer said.
The coaches were counting the points and the possibilities.
"We had to have everything happen. We needed to get our kids pumped up. I started talking to the seniors. They did a tremendous job of keeping the kids up and making sure we got tremendous support," he said.
The upper weight kids came through with 30 straight points - four pins and a win by disqualification.
"A lot of the credit does have to go to the seniors. They are doing a great job of leading the team. They all wrestled with a lot of heart and they showed a lot of leadership," Fischer said.
"We don't have to talk to these kids about how to behave - they just do it. It's been so helpful to have that kind of leadership this year," he said.
"We're going to enjoy this for a little bit then get ready for the Holiday Classic," Fischer said.
The Flathead Braves also had a good day. Wins over Conrad (46-42) and Missoula Big Sky (54-33) gave them a 3-2 record for the tournament.
Two Braves - Suny Cheff and Larry Francis - were undefeated and several others strung together a couple of wins.
"I thought we wrestled really well in both," said Flathead coach Matt Owen.
"It's definitely a work in progress for our younger kids, but it's going to come. All of them improved over the course of the weekend and we'll get there by the end.
"I was excited by how we competed. We were competing in every match," Owen said.
"Our kids are working hard and they have the right attitude."
The Braves are headed this weekend to the Tri-State tournament in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
