COEUR d'ALENE - Police are looking for the driver of a red truck that struck a woman in downtown Coeur d'Alene early Sunday, then sped away.

Jessica White, 22, was released from Kootenai Medical Center Monday evening after suffering three broken vertebrae, along with scrapes and bruises, when she was hit while in a crosswalk about 2:30 a.m., family members said.

"She's really a tough kid," said Jessica's mother, Kris Helstrom.

Police interviewed a witness at the scene. Sgt. Christie Wood said they have a vehicle description and a possible suspect.

According to Jessica White's grandmother, Jeanne Helstrom of Coeur d'Alene, Jessica was with her husband, Tyler, and a few friends crossing the street in a crosswalk at Second and Lakeside when she was struck by an older red truck.

Kris Helstrom said they had been listening to a band in one of the downtown businesses.

The driver of the truck tried to swerve around the group, but still struck Jessica, whose birthday was Monday.

No one was able to get the license plate number, but did get a look at the truck, Jeanne Helstrom said.

She said Jessica was able to walk Monday, and underwent some physical therapy. Jessica was listed in good condition at KMC before being released.

"She's doing OK. She's in a lot of pain," Jeanne Helstrom said.

Doctors told family members her recovery will take about six weeks.

The Coeur d'Alene woman works at Kootenai Neurology. She and her husband have a daughter.

Jeanne Helstrom is upset at what happened.

"My sweet granddaughter is a 22-year old working mother of a 2-year old who is confused as to why her mommy is lying in a hospital bed and can't go home with her and daddy," she wrote. "Jessica suffered several injuries because of someone's irresponsibility."

An investigation continues. Wood said the driver could face felony hit-and-run charges.
