It's snow joke!

Snow may not be here yet, but it is fast approaching. We've all been there... knee deep in the cold white stuff, trying to reach the end of the driveway or walkway as our back screams in protest. You've armed yourself against the cold with multiple layers, have the ergonomic snow shovel and know to lift with your legs. You're set right? But what have you done to prepare your spine for the onslaught of snow? We all know shoveling snow is not the most fun activity the snow brings but the strain on the musculoskeletal system can be literally "back breaking."

Any sort of physical exertion is going to stress our bodies but shoveling snow is especially tricky because it involves a whole range of movements of lifting, twisting and throwing with added weight. Receiving regular adjustments can increase your structural flexibility and strength, making your body better able to cope with physical stressors.

Studies show that shoveling snow in the afternoon could be better for your back. More spinal and disc injuries occur in the morning when there is increased fluid pressure in the discs because the body has been at rest all night. The American Chiropractic Association suggests layers of clothing keep your muscles warm and flexible and to take frequent breaks - a fatigued body asks for injury.

After any of these activities, if you are sore, ice - no heat! Even though it may feel good, heat encourages inflammation. Keep in mind that some people may need a bit more spinal care during the winter months to offset the physical and immune stressors that occur. Take care of your spine first and your health will follow! This can keep you mobile through this winter!

Chiropractic goes beyond pain

Our bodies are amazing. Think about that statement. As you do, also think about the fact that you probably took a breath, blinked your eyes, moved a limb, moved your head, focused your eyes, digested food, healed a cut, wiggled a toe, salivated and a million other internal operations. Although you were not readily thinking about all of these processes, they were going on without the need for your input. Your brain, while also supplying you with conscious thought, is simultaneously orchestrating a laundry list of functions to keep you alive and well.
