COLUMBIA FALLS - Come on Polson, surely you've heard of wunderkind Vince DiGiallonardo by now.
If you haven't, make sure you keep an eye on him after he dropped 21 points in the Pirates' season opener against Anaconda, a 67-47 victory.
"We expected him to lead us and he did just that," Polson head coach Brad Pluff said. "He gets us into our offense."
DiGiallonardo, an all-state quarterback in football, scored 19 of his points in the first three quarters, but most impressive about the Pirates was just how balanced the scoring was. Cody Fischer scored 15, while Ian Laimbeer and Zack Camel both added nine points. Polson posted over 20 points in both the first and second quarters as they sprinted out to a 44-20 lead.
Polson's first game victory showed balanced scoring and its second game showed the teams' depth. With numerous players gone with academic obligations, some of the Pirates' younger players came up in a big way. Against the
No. 2 team in the state, Dillon, Polson held a 17-11 first-quarter lead, despite a short bench and some foul trouble.
"Going in it was kind of a consensus that this was the team to beat," Pluff said. "I was happy with the way the kids competed. I think they responded very well."
Pluff said he liked the way Will Davey, Riley Sampson, Dylan Kelley and Brady Hislop all stepped up big against a Dillon team that reached the state championship game a year ago. The Beavers went into halftime with a 27-26 lead despite eight first-half points by Zack Camel.
Davey led the Pirates with 13 points while Camel finished with 11. Hislop notched a rare four-point play in the second half. Dillon would go on to win 53-42.
Polson will now host Hamilton on Saturday and after their first week of competition, Pluff said his team needs to work on improving their free throw percentage and defense.
"We've also got to cut back on fouls," he said. "We've got to keep our key players on the floor."
