COEUR d'ALENE - Kendalyn Brainard totaled 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists, and hit a key fourth-quarter jumper to help Coeur d'Alene pull away from Mead 57-50 in a nonleague girls basketball game Saturday night at Elmer Jordan Court.

Brainard's jumper from the top of the key with just under 3 minutes remaining increased Coeur d'Alene's lead to four points. Mead did not score on its next possession and had to start fouling, and the Vikings made 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch.

"She played really well; she was strong inside," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "That basket was big."

Erin Legel had 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals for the Vikings (7-2), and Caelyn Orlandi also scored 11.

Jade Redmon scored a game-high 20 points for Mead (1-5), which lost by only four points at Lewiston, and is just 1-3 in the Greater Spokane League.

"Mead's much bigger than we are; they're a much better team than their record indicates," Poffenroth said. "Our kids played well; we didn't make mistakes."

Coeur d'Alene, which committed just five turnovers, plays host to Flathead of Kalispell, Mont., on Thursday.

Priest River (6-3) trailed 11-4 at the end of the first quarter but rebounded after the break and outscored its border rivals 47-31 the rest of the way.

"This is probably the biggest regular season win of my career," said Spartan coach Gary Stewart, who also noted his team had not beaten Newport in the past four years. "The border rivalry always adds to the game and we played tough the entire way. I'm glad we had enough in the tank at the end."

Point guard Steffie Pavey added 18 points for the Spartans, who play at Freeman on Tuesday.

Taylor Lewis scored 15 points for Newport, which came into the game unbeaten after six contests.

No score was reported on the consolation game between Clark Fork and the Post Falls junior varsity.

McKenna Stewart scored 11 points for Kellogg (5-6, 0-2), which returns to action Dec. 27 at a Christmas tourney at Wallace.
