Robert Alsiet Steg stepped into the afterlife on Dec. 14, 2011, at Hospice House. He was born Feb. 18, 1925, to Alsiet Steg and Elsie Robinson Steg in Sandpoint.

He served in the Navy on a PC sub-chaser ship as a First Class Chief Petty Officer during World War II. Upon his discharge in 1946, he attended the U.S. Navy Diesel Mechanics' School in Ames, Iowa.

Bob married Marge Hedgecock in 1953 in Sandpoint, where they resided until moving to Coeur d'Alene in 1971. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was very proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was an avid reader and applied his keen intellect to many diverse interests. He was a mechanically inclined "Mr. Fix It" guy and frequently repaired cars, motorcycles and appliances for friends and family. He enjoyed gathering and identifying mushrooms with his younger daughter, and took motorcycle trips to destinations including Utah and Oregon with his wife and older daughter.

A lifelong resident of Idaho, Bob enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing, considering wildlife as friends. Bob worked on the construction of the Cabinet Gorge Dam in Clark Fork during 1951 and 1952. Most of his life Bob worked in the lumber industry and was employed by W.I. Forest Products as an electrician until his retirement in 1987.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, two daughters, Pamela of Moscow and Carol of Spokane; and three grandsons, Kent, Brandon and Jared; one brother, John of Oroville, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Steg family expresses sincere gratitude to those who generously gave assistance and support during Bob's courageous battle with Alzheimer's - friends, fellow members of the Coeur d'Alene First Ward of the LDS Church, and the caring staff of the Hospice House.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of North Idaho or the Humane Society of Kootenai County.
