SWIMMING

CAST at Junior Nationals: The best swimmers 18 years old and younger converged on Austin, Texas, Dec. 9-11 for the USA Junior National Championships.

Held at the University of Texas, Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team Crocs qualified three swimmers for this meet -Nicole Rozier, 13; Bryce Kananowicz, 15; and Joe Loftus, 16.

All three swimmers swam to best times in every event they swam. Nicole Rozier, at 13 one of the youngest swimmers to qualify for the meet, turned in a solid performance with best times in the 100 butterfly (58.34 seconds), 200 breaststroke (2:30.96) and 200 individual medley (2:11.3).

Bryce Kananowicz, who a few weeks ago won the 200 individual medley at the Idaho state high school meet, dropped another four seconds and swam a 1:50.13 and made the B finals. This makes him the fifth-fastest 15-year-old in this event in the nation.

On day two Bryce and Joe both dropped time in the 400 IM, posting times of 4:00.86 and 4:00.37, respectively. A few minutes later both broke the 50-second barrier for the first time in the 100 backstroke. Joe swam a 49.91 and a few minutes later Bryce swam a 49.27. These times make Joe the sixth-fastest 16-year-old in the nation in this event and Bryce the fastest 15-year-old in the nation in this event.

The next day with the 200 backstroke, Joe swam to a best time of 1:51.68 and Bryce swam to a 1:47.71. This makes Bryce the second-fastest 15-year-old in the nation in this event. The 200 fly was next for Joe and he dropped another three seconds in this event to a 1:50.46. This time makes him the 12th fastest in the nation in this event. Bryce finished the day off with the 1,650 freestyle and dropped an amazing 22 seconds in this event to a 15:42.31, leaving him ranked second in the nation in this event.

BASKETBALL

Youth camp nears: Coach Cal DeHaas and his kids, (Kristin, Kelsi, Kaleb and Kolby) will be putting on a youth basketball camp Dec. 27-29 at Coeur d'Alene High School.

Session 1 will run 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for boys and girls grades 1-3.

Session 2 will run from 1:30-3:30 p.m. for boys and girls grades 4-6.
