RONAN - They call him "The Jet" but last weekend, Marcus Hungerford was "The Scorer" for the Ronan Chiefs.

On Friday, Dec. 16, Hungerford led the Chiefs with 17 points, but it wasn't quite enough, as Ronan fell to visiting Florence 47-44.

"He's a three-year starter, so we expect leadership from him," Ronan head coach Steve Woll said. "He's pretty quick and aggressive on the offensive end. He looked to score. He had two good nights, which we expect from him."

Brady Oakland's three-point attempt with a few seconds left just missed as the Chiefs dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Oakland finished with five points, as did Zach Wagner, while Robbie "Le Bourreau" Gauthier and Edmond Dupuis each added seven. Marley Tanner scored two and Robert Faoa added one to round out the scoring for Ronan.

The next night, the Chiefs executed their pregame plan to near perfection as Ronan outlasted Eureka 73-61.

"We wanted to get up and down the floor with them since they have big size," Woll said. "We wanted to up the tempo to take away their size advantage. We pushed the tempo, rotated guys in. We're trying to build up our bench; I like our depth. At practices, the team works hard and they're in it for the long haul."

Ronan methodically built a 14-point lead after three quarters, outscoring Eureka in each period, providing the Chiefs with enough of a cushion to stave off the visitors.

Hungerford's 20 points set the pace for Ronan, while Gauthier added 12 and Oakland and Faoa eight apiece in the victory, which pushed them to 2-2 early in the season. The rest of the Chiefs' deep scoring attack included Dallas Jore (seven points), Carston Baertsch (six) Tanner (four), Timmy Woll and Jalen Bell (three each) and Wagner (two).

The Chiefs only had one game this week. The results of that game against Loyola weren't available at press time. However, the week will give Ronan time in practice to fine-tune some things they'd like to work on in games.

"We need to figure ways to finish quarters, learn how to be patient on offense when running sets," Woll said. "Our kids are competing for playing time, so when they come in to games they have to give 110 percent or they might not see the floor."
