What is called a foul in North Idaho is not necessarily called a foul in southern Idaho, teams from the North find out quickly when they travel to the Boise area for state tournaments.

In Nevada, meanwhile, it's a whole 'nother ballgame, the Post Falls High boys basketball team found out last week.

"They call it differently than they do back home," Trojans coach Mike McLean said, after Post Falls went 4-0 and was crowned co-champions of the Wild West Shootout in Reno.

"They call things much more tighter (in Nevada)," he said. "It's much more of a finesse game than we're used to. It's nothing like state. This is the fourth state we've played in, and is by far the most finesse state."

Among other physical things, bumping cutters is discouraged.

McLean played all 10 of his players in all four games, so he said playing four games in four days was no big deal.

Playing in the tournament, however, was.

"Our high school has never been invited to a national tournament," McLean said. "To go 4-0 and have a person (Luke Thoreson) named to the all-tournament team ... "

He said other Trojans stood out as well.

"(Michael) Hillman and (Seth) Anderson did a very good job defending the other teams' bigs," McLean said. "Marcus (Colbert) did a good job pushing the ball and harassing the other team's guards. We were one of the smallest teams there."

Post Falls (6-0) doesn't have to travel nearly as far for its next tournament - the Coeur d'Alene Inn-vitational starting next Tuesday and running through Thursday at North Idaho College.

n A reader last week pointed out another local team which had a great season in 2011 - the Coeur d'Alene Loggers class A American Legion baseball team.

The Loggers were the third seed in the Area A (district) tournament, and not only won the tournament, but also went on to win the state tournament and had a strong showing at the regional tournament, finishing third.

n Sites have been determined by the Idaho High School Activities Association for the state high school track meets next spring.

The 5A meet will be at Rocky Mountain High in Meridian; the 4A at Middleton High; the 3A at Eagle High, the 2A at Centennial High and the 1A at Mountain View High in Meridian.

The 2012 meets had to be moved from their usual site at Boise State because of renovations planned for Bronco Stadium this spring. Eventually, the IHSAA plans to move the state meets to a new, smaller, football/track stadium near BSU.

All meets will be May 18-19. In recent years, the state track meets have been a three-day affair, with the 5A and 4A meets wrapping up on Friday night and the smaller schools finishing up on Saturday.

n If the final representation is approved at the next IHSAA meeting in January, Region 1 will lose half a berth to the state 5A volleyball tournament.

Region 1 would get 1.5 berths to state, with the regional runner-up playing the fifth-place team from District 3 for a berth to state. 4A Region 1 would still get one berth; 3A District 1 would drop from two berths to one with St. Maries dropping to 2A; 2A District 1-2 would grow to 1.5 berths with the addition of the Lumberjacks; The 1A Division I District 1 champ would play the third-place team from District 2 in a play-in match; and 1A Division II District 1 would stay at one berth.

District 5-6 will gain more representation in 5A because Madison of Rexburg and Hillcrest of Idaho Falls are scheduled to move up from 4A next year.

Approval of the format for the 2012 state volleyball tournament was tabled to the January meeting. In 2010 and 2011, the IHSAA switched the format to a single-elimination tournament with a consolation bracket, to save money and time, it said.

The IHSAA said it has received letters requesting the tournament return to the old double-elimination format, which had been in use since 1985.

In boys and girls soccer, 5A Region 1 will get 1.5 berths to state, down from two in recent years; 4A Region 1 will get its usual one berth, and 3A District 1-2 will get 1.5 berths, with its runner-up playing the District 3 runner-up in a state play-in game. The 5A Region 1 boys and girls runners-up would play the fifth-place team from District 3; both games would be played at Middleton.
