COEUR d'ALENE - Post Falls senior point guard Marcus Colbert couldn't miss in the first half and Prairie had a tough time battling back from a 21-point deficit as the Trojans beat the Falcons 65-33 in an opening round game of the Coeur d'Alene Inn-vitational basketball tournament on Tuesday at Rolly Williams Court.
Of Colbert's seven field goals, six were from beyond the 3-point line.
"They kept leaving me open," Colbert said. "My teammates kept finding me and I kept hitting shots."
Colbert, who was named MVP of last year's tournament and has signed to play at Montana State next fall, helped Post Falls improve to 10-0 in four years in the tournament.
"I've got something to prove this year," Colbert said. "It's a respect thing for us."
Next up for Post Falls will be Lake City, which beat Chiawana of Pasco, Wash., in earlier action.
"I can't wait, I'm excited for it," said Colbert of playing Lake City. "It should be a good game."
Post Falls (7-0) jumped out to a 23-6 lead after the first quarter and controlled the tempo throughout.
"I was very happy with our defense today," Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. "We contested all the shots and did a good job of limiting their chances."
Four of Colbert's 3-pointers came in the first quarter.
"He spent a lot of time over the summer working on his jump shot," McLean said. "We're very comfortable with him hitting that shot. Offensively, we had really good ball movement."
Post Falls won four straight games earlier this month to win the Wild West Shootout in Reno, Nev.
“Our goal is to win every tournament we’re at,” McLean said. “Whether it’s here, Reno, regionals or the one at the Idaho Center — we take each game very seriously. It doesn’t matter who our opponent is — we’re going to come out and do what we do.”
Seth Anderson had 11 points for Post Falls, which limited Prairie to 18 rebounds.
“They definitely got out to a great start,” Prairie coach Kyle Brooks said. “No. 22 (Colbert) did a good job of knocking down shots. They got off to a better start than we did. It’s tough to come back against a team like that.”
Andy Hak had 10 points off the bench for Prairie.
“We only had 13 turnovers, but they did a great job of winning the boards,” Brooks said. “They just shot the ball really well.”

Lake City 48, Chiawana 45: A team’s shooting can run hot or cold, so Lake City coach Jim Winger was happy to see his squad turn to a consistent source of success: tough defense.
The Timberwolves eventually shut down the penetration of Chiawana’s burley guards, and withstood a late Riverhawks run for a opening-round victory.
“We were just off on offense, especially early,” Winger said of his team, which shot 8 for 26 in the first half. “I think our defense has been getting better, and it carried us today.”
After an evenly-played first half featuring rugged drives through traffic by Chiawana (Pasco, Wash.) guards Miquiyah Zamora (16 points) and Jordan Downing, Lake City used an 11-3 run to take control of the game in the third quarter.
Guards Justin Pratt (9 points) and Bobby Traverse scored 13 of the T-Wolves’ 15 points in the period, helping Lake City (5-3) open a nine-point lead.
“It was a real physical game, and they’ve got some physical guards, so I though our kids handled the ball well,” Winger said. “Justin did a nice job for us down the stretch.”
The Hawks (4-3) canned four 3-pointers in the final quarter to trim the margin to 43-42 with two minutes remaining before a post drive by Kyle Guice and free throws by Mitch Bevacqua, Luke Ness (11 points) and Traverse closed out the win.
Lake City advances to face neighboring rival Post Falls in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal today.

“Offensively, we were awful,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said.
Coeur d’Alene had 12 turnovers in the first half, but held a 25-18 lead at halftime.
“We were taking bad shots, but kept in the game because we played good defense,” Leiss said. “We’ll need to play better against Davis and need to get better.”
Deon Watson had 11 points for Coeur d’Alene (4-2), which faces Davis. On Friday, Watson verbally committed to play football at the University of Idaho.
“I was pretty excited,” Watson said. “I was quite familiar with it and think it’s a great decision.”
Watson also had an offer from Washington State, but opted to remain at Idaho after growing familiar with Vandal coach Robb Akey.
“I didn’t really know Coach Leach and didn’t want to be cast aside in two years,” Watson said.
Watson will also try to walk-on to the Vandal basketball team, where his father played in the ’80s.
“I know what Idaho can give to me,” Watson said. “My dad played there and that, but I want to create my own path.”
Gabe Gutierrez had 12 points for Foster (3-5).
“Coeur d’Alene is a solid team,” Foster coach Mike Broom said. “It seems like they’ve got a lot of guys that can shoot the ball.”

Lake City 55, Redmond 26: Senior point guard Jasmyn Smith hit four 3-pointers to lead the Timberwolves past the Panthers in an opening-round game.
“I try not to think about my shots when I’m on the court,” Smith said. “If I think about it too much, I’ll mess up. I thought our defense was really good. When we went to a zone, it definitely helped us today.”
“She’s a senior leader for us and really stepped up tonight,” Lake City coach Royce Johnston said. “I thought we controlled the tempo through and Jasmyn’s 3s really helped.”
Lake City held Redmond to only two points in the third quarter and shot 12 of 13 from the free-throw line.
Jansen Butler had 11 points and six steals for Lake City (7-4), which faces either Skyline or Coeur d’Alene in the semifinals tonight at 6.
“Our girls, it’s a great group this year,” Johnston said. “We’re approaching everything one game at a time. Everyone has bought into the defense and it has been keeping them in games until the offense gets going. We’re happy right now to be in the prime-time game.”

“Erin really did a nice job for us tonight,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “She played off-guard, point and wherever we needed her tonight. For a guard to have eight rebounds, she really had a good night.”
Coeur d’Alene (9-2) will face Lake City in a semifinal game at 4:30 today.
“We’ll see them now and we’ll see them twice in league,” said Poffenroth of facing Lake City. “We know what they’re going to do and they know what we’ll do.”

Legel, who has signed to play at Great Falls next season, also had four assists.
“It was a good win,” Legel said. “We started a little rough, but finished well.”

Federal Way 49, Post Falls 39: A hot start by the Eagles, combined with the Trojans’ ice-cold shooting, allowed the visitors from the Seattle area to close out Post Falls.
“I’ll be honest with you — we got lucky, because they missed a lot of open shots,” said Federal Way coach Danny Graham. “We allowed too many looks at open layups.”
The Eagles, who dropped a thrilling, one-point decision to Coeur d’Alene in last year’s tournament championship, lost the majority of their players to graduation.
Despite that, Federal Way is 7-1 and has a key player back this season: point guard Darah Huertas-Vining, who scored 27 points.
The Trojans, down 23-11 late in the first quarter, closed the gap to five at intermission as Whitney Gonzales scored seven of her team-high 12 points in the second quarter.
Although Post Falls used a zone defense to slow down the Eagles, the Trojans shot 1 for 13 in the third quarter and 4 for 26 in the second half.
“We actually ran our offense well. We got inside shots and open looks from the perimeter. We just couldn’t convert them,” Trojans coach Marc Allert said. “Whitney gave us a spark; she’s been playing really well for us.”
Brooke Litalien added 11 points for Post Falls (7-4), which faces Lapwai at 9 a.m. today in the girls’ consolation bracket.
