COEUR d'ALENE - Just a year ago, Kendalyn Brainard watched from the sidelines with a torn ACL as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings girls basketball team claimed the inaugural championship at the holiday tournament at North Idaho College.

This year, she'll attempt to lead the Vikings to a repeat following a 51-35 win over the Lake City Timberwolves in a semifinal game on Wednesday at Rolly Williams Court.

Coeur d'Alene (10-2) will face Federal Way, which beat Davis of Yakima earlier Wednesday. It will be the second straight year the two teams have faced off, with Coeur d'Alene winning 70-69 last year.

"It just feels good to be back," Brainard said. "I just got rid of the brace a month ago and am starting to do some of the things I couldn't do before my surgery."

Brainard had 14 points for Coeur d'Alene, with sophomore post Sydney Williams scoring a game-high 17 points.

"I couldn't ask for better teammates than the ones we have," Brainard said. "We work hard in practice and Coach (Dale) Poffenroth gets us prepared for each game to play like we can."

Coeur d'Alene built a 19-11 lead after the first quarter, but Lake City scored eight of the first 10 points in the second quarter to tie the game at 21-all.

Jasmyn Smith and Jansen Butler combined for 20 of Lake City's 28 first-half points.

"Our kids played hard," Lake City coach Royce Johnston said. "We stepped up and competed against them. Both Jasmyn and Jansen played really well tonight."

In the second half, Coeur d'Alene put sophomore guard Madison Sumner on Butler, and she held the senior to three second-half points.

"We struggled offensively in the second half," Johnston said. "They really came out and honored our guards."

Sumner scored eight points off the bench for Coeur d'Alene.

"Madison made a huge difference for us tonight," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "Our kids came out and decided to get a couple stops."

Williams had 10 rebounds and three assists for Coeur d’Alene.
