FRENCHTOWN - Strong defenses collided down in Frenchtown last Thursday and the Lady Broncs came out on top with a slim 40-35 victory, handing the Lady Pirates (3-1) their first loss of the season.

In their first Northwestern A battle of the season, this one coming against conference newcomer Frenchtown who finished last season 7-11, both teams kept it very close the entire way through. The Lady Broncs had also defeated Polson last season in their first game of the season in another close one, 42-36.

Polson took the early lead in the first quarter with an 11 10 edge, but Frenchtown scored 13 points in the second quarter to take the 23-21 lead into halftime. It would be the highest quarter output by either team in the entire game, as both teams buckled down on defense for low point totals.

Frenchtown held the Lady Pirates to five points in the third quarter but Polson was almost equally impressive, holding the Lady Broncs to six points. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Broncs maintained their lead and came away with the 40 35 victory.

Senior post Riley Kenney continued to do work in the paint with 14 points for the Lady Pirates while Mackenzie Banner scored 12. Frenchtown was led by Sarah Lester with 14, while two others scored seven.

Polson moved to 0-1 in conference play, and after Christmas break, they will host Loyola on Jan. 6 and travel up to play NWA opponent Columbia Falls on Jan. 7.

You’ll have to excuse me for stating the obvious, I’m assuming everyone in Polson already knows this but Neal Lewing is one heck of an actor. I was first able to see the Port Polson player as Judge Turpin in the production of Sweeney Todd last November.
