COEUR d'ALENE - The game had all the feeling of a semfinal in the 5A Region 1 tournament.

However, for both the Lake City Timberwolves and Post Falls Trojans, this one did not affect the league standings.

Senior Marcus Colbert scored a game-high 21 points - seven coming in the final quarter - as Post Falls beat Lake City 44-37 on Wednesday to advance to the boys championship game of the Coeur d'Alene Inn-vitational at Rolly Williams Court.

Post Falls will face Davis of Yakima in the championship game tonight at 7:30.

After scoring 22 points in the first three quarters, Post Falls outscored Lake City 22-10 in the final quarter.

"I was really pleased with our fourth-quarter execution," Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. "Lake City had us doing everything they wanted us to in the first three quarters."

The two schools meet for the first time in Inland Empire League play at Lake City High on Jan. 10.

"With there only being four of us in the league, anytime the three of us get together, it's going to be a grinder," McLean said. "You really can't make a mistake. We made some poor decisions and it almost cost us tonight."

Michael Hillman made two free throws with 43.6 seconds remaining to seal the win for Post Falls (8-0).

"The way both Marcus and Michael played down the stretch was a turning point," McLean said. "Our seniors didn't panic tonight when we were down. We figured it out and found a way to get a win."

Riley Moreen scored 17 points for Lake City (5-4).

"Our kids executed exactly what we wanted them to do," Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “Had we made some free throws, we could have gotten this one. But you can’t fault the kids at all. As a coach, you try to put them in the best possible situation.”

Lake City played without starting sophomore center Kyle Guice, who injured his ankle late in the team’s victory over Chiawana on Tuesday afternoon. It is uncertain if the sophomore will play today against Coeur d’Alene in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m.

“We played our guts out,” Winger said. “This does nothing but help us out down the road. It’s still a nonleague game and our other kids gained a lot of experience. It’s not a sprint, but a marathon.”
