Holmberg, Kichton lift Chiefs in SO

CRANBROOK, British Columbia - Mitch Holmberg and Brenden Kichton scored in a shootout and the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Kootenay Ice 3-2 in Western Hockey League play Friday night in front of 3,111 at the Cranbrook Rec. Complex.

After a scoreless first period, Joey Leach opened the scoring for Kootenay with a goal midway through the second.

Spokane responded with Todd Fiddler's fifth goal of the season, but Dylen McKinlay scored at the 16:12 mark to give the Ice a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.

Liam Stewart scored a power-play goal for the Chiefs (17-11-2-3, 39 points) at 7:02 of the third to send the game into overtime.

Both teams fired 40 shots on net and Spokane's Mac Engel stopped 5 of 6 Kootenay attempts in the shootout.

The third-place Chiefs play the U.S. Division-leading Tri-City Americans tonight at 7 at Kennewick, Wash.
