Nothing will encourage you to crawl back into bed and avoid that morning run or workout like heel pain as you hit the floor. Heel pain is easily the most common foot problem affecting men and women of all ages, but especially women over 40.

Plantar fasciitis, the type of heel pain caused by chronic inflammation of the connective tissue extending from the heel bone to the toes, occurs most frequently in adults. Being overweight and wearing inappropriate footwear are common contributing factors. The pain is most noticeable after getting out of bed in the morning, and it tends to decrease after a few minutes and returns during the day with prolonged activities.

There is some good news! Most heel pain can be easily resolved with aggressive conservative care within six-eight weeks. Initial treatment options for heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis include anti-inflammatory medications, padding and strapping of the foot and cortisone injections. Sustained calf stretching and avoidance of flat shoes and barefoot walking are key. Custom arch supports are frequently required and there are several new breakthrough treatments available if traditional therapy fails. When non-surgical treatment fails to remedy heel pain, surgical options may be considered.

With several surgical and non-surgical treatment alternatives available, heel pain should not be tolerated. Heel pain shouldn't prevent you from achieving all your exercise and training goals. If heel pain is holding you back, foot and ankle specialists are the experts to consult for determining the most appropriate treatments.
