Influenza season has arrived earlier than usual in Sanders County. A young male was diagnosed with Influenza A and many school age children in Plains are reporting influenza like illness according to Cindy Morgan, RN, Health Officer.  The health department had been anticipating the first Influenza case in the county since Montana has confirmed influenza activity in 15 counties, primarily in the central and western portions of the state. Influenza activity is continuing to escalate around the state but remains slightly below the seasonal baseline for this time of year according to public health officials in Helena.

As of January 15, 2011 the Montana Public Health Laboratory has identified three circulating Influenza sub-types so far which are Influenza A/H3, Influenza A/H1, and Influenza B. All three appear to be well represented in the seasonal vaccine according the Morgan. Therefore vaccination with trivalent influenza vaccine remains the best method of preventing influenza and its potentially severe complications.  Individuals who have put off receiving the vaccine can still get the vaccine according to Morgan.

During times of local influenza illness, individuals can prevent the spread of influenza by covering their nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing, washing hands often, cleaning items that are touched often such as door knobs and light switches and staying home from work or school when ill. People who believe they have influenza should see their health care provider for diagnosis. Influenza surveillance and diagnostic testing can aid clinical judgment and help guide treatment decisions. Furthermore it is helpful knowing which viruses are circulating to provide data on vaccine components and monitor antiviral resistance.
