Trojans use strong 2nd half to get by T-Wolves

COEUR d'ALENE - Connor Hill scored 28 points to lead the second-ranked Post Falls Trojans past the fifth-ranked Lake City Timberwolves 77-76 in a 5A Inland Empire League game Tuesday at Lake City High.

"It was a tale of two halves tonight," Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. "At halftime, it was 22-21 us. In the second half, they were a lot more aggressive on offense. We had some chances down the stretch with all seniors on the floor and didn’t get it done.”

Chris Wheelock scored 35 points, Mark Smyly 20 points and five rebounds for Lake City (12-5, 3-3 5A IEL), which hosts Moscow on Thursday.

Luke Thoreson scored 19 points for Post Falls (14-2, 3-1), which travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

MOSCOW — Aaron Donaldson and Josh Helbling scored 17 points apiece for the Bears in a win over the Vikings at Bear Den.

“We got ourselves in a hole and dug ourselves out to force overtime,” Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Steve Bourgard said.

Senior Jake Matheson scored 28 points and Deon Watson 24 points for Coeur d’Alene (11-7), which played without guard Andrew Baracco, who missed the game with the flu.

Coeur d’Alene hosts Lewiston on Thursday.

Hunter Arno kept the Hawks (3-15, 0-4 4A IEL) close with a game-high 18 points and nine boards, but his team could never cut the lead to less than four.

POST FALLS — Tisha Phillips, a transfer from Lapwai, scored a game-high 21 points as the visiting Bengals wrapped up the 5A Inland Empire League title at The Arena.

Four players scored in double figures for Lewiston (17-3, 5-1 5A IEL), which shot 28 of 41 (68.3 percent) from the field.

“We don’t match up size wise with them at all,” Post Falls coach Chris Johnson said. “They were still tall, but they also shot the ball well (from the outside). But I am very proud of how hard my kids battled.”

Tori Davenport led Post Falls (8-12, 0-6) with 14 points.

The two teams meet again Friday in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament at 7:30 p.m. at Booth Hall in Lewiston. No. 2 seed Coeur d’Alene (16-4) plays No. 3 Lake City (15-5) in the first game at 5:45.

LEWISTON — Jacob Benson (285 pounds), Nick Wells (125) and Nate Partenfelder (140) each had pins for Lake City.

The Timberwolves forfeited three matches — two because of injury — and were pinned five times.

“That was two matches by Nate and Nick, to pin those guys,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “That’s big momentum heading into regionals. We’re just too banged up to compete with a team like Lewiston.”

Lake City wrestles Timberlake and St. Maries on Thursday in Spirit Lake.
