COEUR d'ALENE - Jake Plummer, Jeff Robinson, Irene Matlock, Ray Faraca, Ian Waltz and Ed Cheff have been selected for induction into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2011, the hall of fame committee announced.
They will be inducted at the 49th annual North Idaho Sports Banquet, scheduled for April 9 at the Best Western Coeur d'Alene Inn.
Tickets will be available at all Les Schwab tire outlets, or by calling Dr. James Lynn at 762-1043.
Plummer, who spent summers in Coeur d'Alene as a youth, was a three-sport star at Capital High in Boise before starring at quarterback at Arizona State, where he led the Sun Devils to the Rose Bowl following the 1996 season.
Known as “Jake the Snake,” Plummer played 10 years in the NFL, six with the Arizona Cardinals and four with the Denver Broncos. He finished with 29,253 passing yards, 161 touchdowns and 161 interceptions.
Robinson was a three-sport athlete at Ferris High in Spokane before starring at defensive end at the University of Idaho, then played for five different teams in the NFL, becoming known later in his career as a long snapper.
He had a school-record 57.5 sacks at Idaho, then was selected in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.
He played four seasons with Denver, four with the St. Louis Rams, three with the Dallas Cowboys, another season back with the Rams, and parts of three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, most recently in 2009. He eventually switched to tight end with the Rams in 1999.
Matlock coached Sandpoint High to a 101-7 record and four state volleyball championships from 1982-85 before taking over at Community Colleges of Spokane, where she won 715 matches and four Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships.
She coached Eastern Washington to a 12-4 Big Sky Conference record as the Eagles’ interim head coach in 2007.
Faraca, a Kellogg High grad, returned to spend 34 years at his alma mater, teaching biology and coaching football and track and field. His boys track teams won 16 straight district championships. He was an assistant football coach most of his career but in 1984, as head coach, Kellogg tied Post Falls for the Intermountain League championship.
He played football at Idaho, starting at right guard on offense and nose guard on defense for three years.
Waltz, the former Post Falls High and Washington State star, is a two-time Olympian in the discus. He was the 2008 Olympic Trials champion, and is a two-time USA Track and Field champion. He was an eight-time All-American at WSU, and remains the state high school record holder in the discus with a toss of 203 feet, 9 inches, set in 1995.
Cheff had an incredible run in 34 seasons as baseball coach at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston. He posted an overall record of 1,705-430 and guided the Warriors to 16 NAIA World Series titles before retiring following the 2010 season.
Under Cheff, Lewis-Clark State qualified for the NAIA World Series 28 times — more than double any other NAIA program. LCSC finished fourth or higher at nationals 25 times.
