Whitefish superheroes ready for carnival finale

Expect a “Marvel-ous” time at the Whitefish Winter Carnival on Saturday.

With a carnival theme of “Whitefish marvels at the comics,” superheroes will be out in full force for the final day of festivities.

Spider-Man and Captain America are sure to surface during the carnival parade at 3 p.m. Saturday.

It’s one of the biggest parades in the Flathead Valley.

Members of the Winter Carnival Royal Court will reign over the day.

They include King Ullr and Queen of the Snow, Bart and Carole Erickson; Prime Minister Doug Reed; Duchess of Lark Betsi Morrison; Prince Frey Connor Donahue; Princess Freya Hailey Vasquez and Herald the Hark Michael Reimer.

Saturday’s activities include:

n Kiddie Carnival — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Whitefish Middle School gym.

n Penguin Plunge — 12:30 p.m. at City Beach on Whitefish Lake; it’s a fundraiser for Special Olympics; registration starts at 10 a.m. To register call Judy Gephart 863-8888 or go to http://www.somt.org.

n St. Charles Catholic Church Pie Social — 1 p.m.

n Black Star Beer Barter — 1 p.m. in front of the Great Northern Brewery, 2 Central Ave. Participants will vie for the top prize of a year’s supply of Black Star beer. Event information can be found at www.blackstarbeer.com/barter.

n Yeti Snowskate Jam —Kiddie Park at Fifth Street and Central Avenue; 11 a.m. deadline to register; competition is 1 to 3 p.m. for younger classes; 4:30 to 7:15 p.m. for advanced categories.

n Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Display — 7 p.m. Whitefish Mountain Resort; ski instructors and patrol ski down Ed’s Run.

Sunday

n Rotary Pancake Breakfast  — 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Whitefish Moose Lodge. A royal feast for all. Includes eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, pancakes, juice & coffee; $8 per person.

Climate change awards announced

Climate Smart Glacier Country announced its Climate Smart Champions during a ceremony at the Earth Day celebration April 21 in Whitefish. Awards were presented to businesses, youth and an individual who are leaders in building local solutions to climate change challenges.
