LEWISTON - The Lake City Timberwolves and Coeur d'Alene Vikings have waged some pretty good battles over the years, but Lake City hadn't been able to come out on top since the Timberwolves beat Coeur d'Alene in the 2007 state 5A championship game.
That all changed Friday night, as Lake City senior Alyssa Kacalek scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter as the third-seeded and fifth-ranked Timberwolves defeated second-seeded and fourth-ranked Coeur d'Alene 41-35 at Booth Hall in Lewiston in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.
Lake City had lost 13 straight to Coeur d'Alene prior to Friday's victory.
"It was an overall team effort tonight," Lake City coach Royce Johnston said. "I'm happy for our girls."
Lake City (16-5) advanced to the championship game, where the T-Wolves will play top-seeded Lewiston (18-3) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Booth Hall for a berth to state Feb. 17-19 at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
Post Falls (8-13) travels to Coeur d'Alene (16-5) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a loser-out game.
Later Friday, Lewiston sophomore guard Karlee Wilson scored a team-high 13 points as the third-ranked Bengals defeated Post Falls 46-32.
“It’s going to be a battle of wills on Tuesday,” Lewiston coach Pat Teichmer said. “They like to shoot the 3 and we like to pound the ball inside. They handed it to us up there and we handed it to them down here. It should be a great game on Tuesday.”
Lake City 41, Coeur d’Alene 35: Lake City failed to score in the first six minutes of the third quarter as the Vikings built a 25-19 lead.
“We played really good defense all night tonight,” Johnston said. “I’d looked up and it seemed like we were stuck at 19 for a while, but we’d only allowed six points. I knew we’d get a run.”
A free throw by Lake City guard Sydney Butler with 2:32 remaining evened the score for the first time since halftime.
“When you go into a funk, a lot of teams would have folded,” Johnston said. “We’ve got to win two games to get to where we want to be, so we’ll need to refocus on Tuesday.”
Coeur d’Alene led 30-26 midway through the fourth quarter, but was forced to foul late as Lake City scored its final seven points from the foul line.
“They had two transition baskets that killed us in the fourth quarter,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “We didn’t shoot well at all tonight. We missed some layins. It was a really close game, but we can’t lose on the transition points. It changed the momentum of the game.”
Junior Erin Legel scored 12 points to lead Coeur d’Alene.
“Our kids did what they were supposed to do tonight on defense,” Poffenroth said.
Senior post Carli Rosenthal had nine points and 14 rebounds for Coeur d’Alene.
Syndey Butler had seven points and six assists for Lake City.

Lewiston 46, Post Falls 32: The Trojans opened the game with an 8-2 lead on 3-pointers from Katie King and Brooke Litalien before the Bengals outscored Post Falls 27-15 in the second and third quarters combined.
“We had too many turnovers tonight,” Post Falls coach Chris Johnson said. “We need to get a quality shot each time down the court against a team like Lewiston.”
King finished with a team-high nine points for Post Falls, followed by Litalien with eight points.
“Our kids played extremely well,” Johnson said. “If we could have gotten some shots to fall, we would have been right there.”
Post Falls guard Tori Davenport finished with five points after picking up her third foul midway through the first quarter.
“That killed us,” Johnson said. “To have your best player on the bench just hurt us tonight. Our kids deserve a lot of credit for the way they played and their execution.”
Of the matchup on Tuesday, Johnson added it will be another battle against a quality team.
“It will be very similar,” Johnson said. “We’ve got some big matchup problems against them. That game is going to come down to which team comes back psychologically.”
Lewiston is seeking its second straight regional title on its home floor.
“Karlee’s not at full strength right now, but we’re trying to ease her back into the lineup,” Teichmer said. “She played just as good defensively as offense tonight.”
