POCATELLO - Tremayne Johnson's layup with 19 seconds left lifted Eastern Washington past Idaho State 69-67 on Saturday night.
Johnson's basket gave the Eagles (8-15, 5-6 Big Sky) a 68-67 lead. The Bengals (6-16, 2-8) had a chance to retake the lead with 10 seconds remaining, but Phyllip Taylor missed two free throws. Glen Dean, who led Eastern Washington with 17 points, added a free throw with 5 seconds left for the final margin.
Eastern, which had lost 18 straight road games, had not tasted victory on the road since Jan. 10, 2010, when the Eagles won 75-73 at Montana State.
"I was so happy for our players - that was fun," said Eastern head coach Kirk Earlywine, whose team has no seniors on its roster. "We showed unbelievable resiliency in just hanging in there. We hung in there and hung in there long enough to win it."
Taylor led the Bengals with 16 points, and Mike Lacey scored 13.
Johnson finished with 15 points, and Cliff Colimon added 11 for Eastern Washington, who trailed 28-26 at the half.
Eastern Washington plays host to Weber State next Saturday.
