COEUR d'ALENE - A breakout of auto burglaries spoiled a neighborhood's Super Bowl weekend, with suspects making off with a handgun and other valuables, according to police reports Monday.

A shotgun was taken during an auto burglary earlier in the week, police said.

Late Saturday or early Sunday, the crooks nailed three unlocked vehicles at a residence on the 1900 block of North Rose Lane. Two of the vehicles were in the driveway, and one was on the street.

Three compact disc cases were taken there with about 70 CDs, police said.

"Some auto burglaries can be prevented by simply locking your doors," said Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Wayne Longo. "Good personal and community awareness of your surroundings go a long way toward keeping yourself and your property safe."

To the north of the Rose Lane location, an unlocked 2004 Subaru Forester was hit and the thieves made off with a pair of compact binoculars, a flashlight, magnifying glass and calculator. The vehicle was parked in the driveway of a home on the 3100 block of North Eighth Street.

Nearby, on the 3200 block of North Seventh Street, thieves got into an unlocked pickup truck and took change, a can of chewing tobacco and a set of keys from the console area. Keys to the Post Falls Senior Center were lifted.

On the 2900 block of Seventh, prowlers lifted a cord for an iPod from an unlocked 2000 Honda Accord, according to a police report.

On the 2600 block of North Sixth Place, a DVD player was stolen from an unlocked 2001 Chevy Silverado parked in a driveway.

A Taurus 44 Special was reported stolen from a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck parked on the street on the 2900 block of North Fifth Street. The doors of the truck were believed to be unlocked when the gun was taken.

The property owner said the gun was stashed under the seat. It is valued at $400.

Also missing from the truck, the owner told police, was equipment he had for work, including a hand-held computer and ax.

Just days earlier, either late Wednesday or early Thursday, a .410 shotgun was reported stolen from an unlocked 1998 GMC Sierra Pickup truck on the 1400 block of East Borah Avenue. That gun is valued at $150.
