DESMET - Authorities found human remains in the rubble of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe Sister's Building on Monday.
Tribal police discovered the remains while investigating the cause of the fire, according to a Tribe press release. It was clear the individual had died in the fire, a Tribe official said.
The remains have not been identified.
"We're working with the FBI and the state fire marshal," Coeur d'Alene Tribal Police Chief Keith Hutcheson said in the release. "Hopefully, we can determine who this person was for the sake of this individual's family."
The Sister's Building was destroyed by fire on Feb. 3. The cause of the blaze is unknown, the release said.
"We might never know what caused this fire," Hutcheson said. "We don't know why this person was in the building. It's a tragedy that someone lost their life."
The Sister's Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Up until its destruction, the Tribe used the building for educational and cultural purposes, storage and to house equipment for wireless Internet services in the DeSmet area.
