Cardinals swept by Salt Lake in opener

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Sophomore Kyle Brinkerhoff went 2 for 3 with three RBIs as the Salt Lake Bruins defeated the North Idaho Cardinals 5-4 on Wednesday in the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball opener for both teams.
Sophomore Shelby Gonzales hit her fifth home run of the season and had four RBIs and former Coeur d'Alene High standout Nina Goodwin had a single for NIC in the first game.
Ariel Zimmerman had 11 strikeouts in the first game for Salt Lake (10-4).
In the second game, Savanah Webster and Madi White had two RBIs apiece as the Bruins defeated the Cardinals 6-1.
Kara LaVaute hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for NIC (5-6).
The two teams play another doubleheader today at St. George.
