POST FALLS - Let the construction begin to repair and upgrade the Post Falls Senior Center.

Alison McArthur, the center's director, said the facility is expected to re-open on or before April 15.

It closed on Jan. 5 after a water line broke, damaging the floor, Sheetrock, insulation and furniture.

The nonprofit has tapped Rosenberger Construction of Hayden Lake as the general contractor. The total damage is estimated at more than $100,000, McArthur said.

"They should pull the permits (for construction) on Monday or Tuesday," McArthur said.

She said the center needs to raise about $10,000 - the amount not covered by insurance.

A spaghetti dinner and dance fundraiser will be held on Sunday at the Post Falls American Legion, 1137 E. Poleline Ave., at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the senior center, Washington Trust Bank in Post Falls and at the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce.

T.J. and the Country Legends and other musicians will perform. There will also be raffles.

Those wanting to make tax-deductible money donations to the center can send them to: P.O. Box 418, Post Falls, ID 83877 or drop them off at the center, 1215 E. Third Ave., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Supporters can also sponsor a roundtable for $125. Their names will appear on a plaque.

McArthur said the center's staff is grateful for those who have stepped forward to assist while the facility has been closed.

Garden Plaza has agreed to continue to host meals until the center re-opens. New Vision students have been doing upholstery work on about 150 chairs for extra credit.

"It gives the students some work experience and it allows them to feel like being a part of the community," said Mark Jones, who coordinates the students on the project. "Some of the students serve at the center anyway."

McArthur said some upgrades, in addition to repairs, are planned during the construction process. The entrance between the Finley Room, which is the main dining hall, and the Dougall Room, used for bingo and classes, will be widened for larger events. Energy-efficient windows are also planned.

"The center is coming into the 21st century," McArthur said.
