Brandon Rannebarger is more anxious than he is nervous about the state swim meet today and Saturday in Butte at the YMCA pool.

"What an awesome year it's been," Rannebarger said.

"We're looking for a positive end."

The head coach for both Flathead and Glacier high schools will have a strong contingent competing, with a couple individuals for both teams and Glacier's boys relay teams in contention for first-place finishes.

"We tried to stack the relays," Rannebarger said.

"If everyone is performing the way they should be, we could be up there and make a solid run at things."

The Glacier boys, led by Rannebarger's "Fab Four," have dominated the relays and have the state's high-point scorer in sophomore Jordan Loyda.

Loyda will be joined in the relays - 200 and 400 freestyle and 200 medley - by his brother Josh, Aaron Murry and Logan Streit. Those four are undefeated in those three events.

The Loydas, Murry and Streit will also swim individually in the freestyle.

Rannebarger said Streit has been battling an illness, like many members of both teams, "but he's stepped up in the past."

Rannebarger is looking for Glacier's Jacob Williams to make an impact in the 500 freestyle. He will also swim the 200 freestyle and is an alternate on the three relays.

Regarding the Glacier girls, MaKenna Siebenaler, a finalist last year at state in the 50 freestyle, will challenge in that event this weekend. She finished sixth in 2010.

"A phenomenal swimmer," Rannebarger said.

"She's ready to pop some fast times."

She will also swim the 200 freestyle and two relays - 200 medley and 200 freestyle.

Samantha King, the Wolfpack captain, and Maddie Walters, the school record holder in the 500 freestyle, also look to contribute. Walters, who broke her arm during a powder puff football game, has been in the water for just the final half of the season.

Maxie Scroggs, Glacier's talented junior, will miss the state meet because of academic issues.

"The girls are still learning, growing right now," Rannebarger said.

"We definitely could use a couple more swimmers."

As could Flathead. The Braves have only four boys and four girls at state, compared to Glacier's 10 boys and 11 girls.

Flathead does have a couple of talented individuals, however.

"Lars Thorderson and Ben Mason are really stepping up on the guys side," Rannebarger said.

"I've watched them both train and work very hard. It's time to let it all hang out and see where our times take us."

Both swim the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, in addition to two relays.

For the FHS girls, Rannebarger said Mckenzie Lane (50 and 500 freestyle) "is looking really, really good. As a freshman, she's a force. She's been building confidence, slowly getting better and better. She's starting to challenge, starting to take it to another level right now."

Rannebarger said Hailie Maas (50 and 100 freestyle) "is also performing at a high level. It's nice to see the girls drops some times."

Swimming begins at 11 a.m. both days. Today's session is strickly qualifying.

The top six times advance to Saturday's finals. Those placing seventh through 12th are in the consolation finals on the final day.
