NJCAA rescinds all sanctions against NIC men's basketball program

The NJCAA has rescinded all sanctions imposed on North Idaho College regarding the eligibility of men’s basketball player Guy-Marc Michel, who played at NIC in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
On Thursday, the NJCAA ruled NIC did not have to forfeit any victories Michel played in during those two seasons.
In December, the NJCAA banned the NIC men from participating in postseason play this season, ruling that Michel was ineligible when he played for the Cardinals because he played for an upper-level French professional team prior to coming to NIC.
The NJCAA rescinded that ban last month, following an NIC appeal.
NIC contended Michel was still an amateur because he did not sign a pro contract — which satisfied NJCAA requirements in previous years — and noted several schools currently have international players who played for pro teams prior to playing in the U.S. NJCAA rules regarding professional leagues overseas are “vague,” NIC athletic director Al Williams said, and added the NJCAA hopes to clear up interpretation of the rule at meetings in March.
Last summer, the NJCAA changed the rule where players couldn’t play against pros under any circumstances.
As a precaution, NIC held out current players Tugce Canitez (Turkey) and Idris Lasisi (Belgium) from last weekend’s basketball games until the issue was resolved. Both played against professionals in their home countries prior to coming to NIC, but did not sign pro contracts. Both played in Friday night’s games at Salt Lake Community College.
An NJCAA spokesperson said it is NJCAA policy not to comment on its rulings.
