COOS BAY, Ore. - North Idaho College, which had won the last 10 Region 18 wrestling tournaments, placed second on Saturday at Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Clackamas Community College of Oregon City, Ore., ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA, totaled 104.5 points. NIC, ranked No. 1, had 94.5. The Cardinals had also won 35 of the previous 38 regional tournaments.

"We're a little disappointed not winning the tournament," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "We didn't wrestle well enough to beat Clackamas today and this was probably the flattest we've wrestled in a long time."

Still, NIC qualified all 10 of its wrestlers (as did Clackamas) for the NJCAA tournament, which NIC will host Feb. 25-26 at the Spokane Convention Center. The top four in each weight qualified for nationals.

Sophomores Kyle McCrite (125 pounds), Jeremy Bommarito (157) and Jamelle Jones (197) claimed regional titles for NIC.

"Those guys wrestled well," Whitcomb said. "When we do well, you can always point to them. Kyle dropped from No. 1 in the nation to No. 3 and beat the kid that got him. Bommarito got a big win for us at 157 and Jamelle was Jamelle. He's ranked No. 1, went out and didn't stumble."

Jesse Nielsen (174), Brock Banta (133), Jake Mason (165) and Matthew Foxworthy (285) each finished second for NIC.

"Jesse wrestled a heck of a match," Whitcomb said. "Brock took a loss in double OT. We need to be firing on all cylinders right now and it doesn't change that we need to work hard to get that national title."

Braden Mowry (141) was third and McKray Jones (149) and Justin Korthius (184) each finished fourth.

"Two weeks from now, we'll be in the finals of nationals," Whitcomb said. "We need to get back to work to make a good run at it. We get it at our home. Those three regional champions are going to be the guys that lead us, but we need to keep working as a team. Clackamas got the upper hand this weekend and nobody feels good about it. If they do, they're on the wrong team."

TEAM SCORES - 1, Clackamas 104.5. 2, North Idaho 92.5. 3, Highline 69. 4, Southwest Oregon 37.5. 5, Yakima 27.5.
